Verdict: Retool is the most polished way for a team with at least one developer to build internal tools on top of existing databases and APIs: admin panels, support consoles, approval dashboards. Its pricing splits builders from internal users, so the free plan and cheap viewer seats go a long way. Watch the bill once you need Business features or many editors. If self-hosting for free matters, Appsmith or ToolJet are the open-source alternatives.

On Business, external users (clients, partners) are free for the first 50, then $8 per user per month annual, falling to $4 at volume. Enterprise is required for SSO and unlimited users on self-hosted installs.

Sizing a real team: 3 builders + 25 internal users on Team (annual) = 3 × $10 + 25 × $5 = $155/month. The same team on Business = 3 × $50 + 25 × $15 = $525/month. The jump to Business is the decision point. Upgrade only for features you need, like audit logs, granular permissions or external users.

Where Retool shines

• Connects to everything. Postgres, MySQL, REST, GraphQL, Snowflake, Stripe and dozens more as data sources, with queries written in SQL or JavaScript.
• Component library depth. Tables, forms, charts and detail views are production-quality out of the box. That's why "build an admin panel in an afternoon" is realistic.
• Workflows for scheduled jobs and backend automations alongside the UI.

Where it falls short

• Per-seat costs escalate. Reviewers consistently flag that Retool gets expensive as teams and editors grow, and Enterprise is costly.
• Not truly no-code. You'll write SQL and JavaScript for anything beyond simple CRUD.
• Vendor lock-in. Apps live in Retool's format. Moving off means rebuilding.

Choose Retool if

• You have a developer (or a SQL-comfortable ops person) and existing databases or APIs
• You need polished internal dashboards fast, for a modest number of builders
